Why a dedicated uppercase-only worksheet
Uppercase letters are usually the first ones a child learns to form — they tend to have simpler, more distinct shapes than their lowercase counterparts, which is exactly why most early-childhood handwriting instruction starts there. But a worksheet built for that early stage doesn't need a lowercase section sitting alongside it; a child who's only working on capital letters benefits more from a full page of focused uppercase practice than from a page split between letters they're not ready for yet.

How to use this worksheet
- Type just the letters that need practice — a single letter, a few, or a short run like "A B C." There's no requirement to work through the whole alphabet on one page.
- Say each letter's name as it's traced. Naming the letter while forming it reinforces the connection between the shape and its identity, not just the motor pattern of writing it.

What this actually practices
Beyond basic letter formation, focused uppercase practice builds the specific stroke patterns — top-to-bottom verticals, left-to-right horizontals, the large sweeping curves in letters like C, G, and S — that are foundational to legible handwriting generally, not just to the capital letters themselves. Many of these same stroke patterns reappear in lowercase forms and even in numbers, so solid uppercase fundamentals tend to pay off well beyond this one worksheet.
Adjusting it by age
- Ages 3-4 (preschool): The natural starting point for most children's formal handwriting instruction. Keep it to a small handful of letters per session, using Dotted trace, and treat any genuine attempt as a success regardless of precision.

Grouping letters by stroke type
One useful way to sequence uppercase practice is by shared stroke pattern rather than strict alphabetical order — letters that use similar hand motions tend to reinforce each other when practiced together:
- Straight-line letters (E, F, H, I, L, T) use only vertical and horizontal strokes, with no curves at all — often the easiest group for a beginner, and a natural starting point.
- Diagonal-line letters (A, K, M, N, V, W, X, Y, Z) add angled strokes, a genuine step up in difficulty from pure verticals and horizontals.
- Curved letters (C, G, O, Q, S) rely on smooth, continuous curves rather than straight segments — a different motor skill that benefits from its own dedicated practice block rather than being mixed in with straight-line letters.
- Mixed letters (B, D, J, P, R, U) combine straight and curved strokes in the same letter, which is why they're often introduced later, once both stroke types are individually comfortable.
This isn't the only valid way to sequence letters — many programs use a child's own name, or straightforward alphabetical order — but grouping by stroke type is a genuinely useful option when a specific child is struggling more with curves than straight lines, or vice versa.
