About names in India
India's naming conventions vary enormously by region, language, and religion — a Tamil-speaking family, a Punjabi-speaking family, and a Bengali-speaking family each draw from largely different naming traditions despite sharing a country, and a name extremely common in one Indian state can be almost unheard of in another. Sanskrit-derived names are widespread across many Hindu communities, often chosen for their specific meaning related to virtues, deities, or nature.
In a number of Hindu families, a child's name is chosen partly based on astrology or a family priest's guidance around the timing of the birth — tied to the child's nakshatra, or birth star — rather than picked in advance the way naming often works elsewhere. Muslim, Christian, Sikh, and other religious communities across India maintain their own equally rich naming traditions alongside these Hindu customs.
