About names in South Korea
Korean given names are traditionally two syllables long, paired with the family name, and many Korean families still use a shared "generation name" syllable among siblings or cousins of the same generation — a custom rooted in Confucian family naming traditions going back many centuries. Western-style single given names have also become more common in South Korea in recent years, especially among younger, urban families influenced by global pop culture.
Many Korean names are also chosen partly for the meaning of their component hanja (Chinese-derived) characters.
