A repeat, then a rotation

AABC combines two ideas this site's earlier patterns teach separately — a repeated icon at the start, the same idea AAB introduces with three icons, followed by two more genuinely different icons in sequence, echoing ABC's no-repeat rotation. A child working through this pattern has to switch strategies partway through a single unit — first checking for a repeat, then tracking a rotation.

Helping a child track the switch in strategy

Naming the unit in two labeled chunks out loud — "same, same" for the first two icons, then "different, different" for the last two — reinforces that this one unit genuinely contains two different structures back to back, rather than a single rule applied uniformly across all four positions.

Where this fits among the advanced patterns

AABC sits alongside ABCC as one of two patterns that combine a repeat with a rotation — AABC puts the repeat first, ABCC puts it last. Comparing the two directly shows a child that the same two ingredients can combine in a genuinely different order.

Every numbered worksheet uses a fresh set of icons testing this identical repeat-then-rotation structure.

Using this worksheet effectively

Confirming a child is already comfortable with both AAB-style repeats and ABC-style rotation separately, before combining them here, tends to go more smoothly than introducing all three ideas at once. Every worksheet downloads as a free, print-ready PDF with no account required.

Frequently asked questions

Comfort with a simple repeated-icon pattern (like AAB) and a simple rotation pattern (like ABC) separately — this pattern combines both ideas into one unit.

AABC opens with the repeated icon and ends with the rotation; ABCC reverses that order, opening with the rotation and ending with the repeat.

No separate key needed — the repeat-then-rotation unit repeats visibly and can be checked directly against the row.
